Black culture to take center stage at Black History Month celebration at State House

With Black History Month upon us, the Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus and Black Lives Matter RI PAC is giving Black culture a spotlight Wednesday with a celebration at the State House.

From 3:00 p.m. To 8:00 p.m. the Bell Room on the first floor will become a pop-up market for numerous Black-owned businesses.

The event will also offer hair braiding and spread the word about the C.R.O.W.N. Act. (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.)

The C.R.O.W.N. Act attempts to stop racial discrimination based on hair style and texture.

It’s an initiative that has spread among state legislatures and local governments around the country.

According to The CROWN Coalition, such legislation has passed in 19 states.

Rhode Island is not one of them, but some lawmakers are trying to change that.

At 6:00 p.m., some of those very same lawmakers and community leaders will speak on the act and the need to pass the legislation in Rhode Island.

A similar event took place at the State House in 2022.
