Stop me if you’ve heard this one.
Ever feel like you’re the only person of color in the room? Do you have that sinking feeling like no one there quite knows where you are coming from? They aren’t really seeing you for you. You’ll almost certain their realities aren’t your realities.
Okay. Now present your art to them.
Ask them to critique it, to help improve it, and finally them to support it.
No despairing this time.
There’s a place you can go that is different. There is a safe place where creators of color can feel seen, accepted, understood, and supported.

It’s the BIPOC Coffeehour and Write-In. And it’s Every Last Saturday of the month.
It’s held at LitArts RI, 400 Harris Avenue (Unit E) from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The first hour, you get to chat and mingle with cool creatives of color.
The second hour is yours. You can keep the conversation going, or you can work.
We all know it’s hard to find time to devote to your craft. Here is a free, guilt-free hour.
It’s run by the LitArt RI’s BIPOC Advisory Committee.
The Committee is made up of LuzJennifer Martinez, Cherie Rowe, and Frank Maradiaga. (Of Rhode Island In Color.)
Come by, it’s free. And has been described many times as “magical.”
